Lighting Fixtures
Choosing the Right Look at the Right Price
Finding the right lighting fixtures to provide light over kitchen sinks or kitchen appliances can be tricky. Light fixtures can be expensive, so finding lights that will suit your kitchen décor while giving light where you need it most is one of the most important decisions you can make for your kitchen remodeling project.

Lighting fixtures vary in the amount and quality of light they can deliver to your work areas, so choose carefully. Whatever lighting solution you choose, you’ll be living with your light fixtures for a long time.
First, think about how much light you need; this will vary, depending on whether your lighting fixture will go over a kitchen furniture arrangement, over kitchen sinks, or if it is indirect lighting for kitchen appliances. Some light fixtures are not equipped to handle high wattage bulbs, so make sure to find out how much light you can expect from any fixture you are considering. If you replace two 100-watt bulbs with one 60-watt bulb, the difference in light will be considerable. Check the number of bulbs as well as the wattage allowable for each bulb outlet in your fixture. Some lighting fixtures have reflective surfaces; these, as well as white fixtures, are designed to reflect more light into the room and can cut down on the necessity for more lights. One good light fixture is a better choice than multiple smaller, less effective lights.
Second, think about the existing kitchen appliances and kitchen furniture. Will the design of the fixture complement or clash with your current kitchen décor? If your kitchen appliances are modern and metallic, an antique gold candelabra-style fixture may not be your best choice. Think about color, finish, and how the fixture will complement your existing kitchen furniture when choosing a light fixture. Generally, earth tones go well with copper kitchen sinks, enhancing their natural glow.
Lastly, look at price. Very similar lighting fixtures can have very different price tags. You may be in love with a designer light fixture, but you can often find very similar lights at much lower prices. Shop around to get the best deals. Be willing to compromise on less-important details, and you can be sure to get a light fixture you’ll love at a price you can afford.
