Choosing the Right Components for Your Kitchen
Whether using your kitchen appliances to whip up a gourmet meal to entertain guests, or cooking comfort foods for your family, your kitchen, is the heart of your home. Choosing the appliances that work best for you is an important task. From refrigerator to dishwasher to stove, each kitchen appliance has to perform to your expectations.

Begin by writing a home improvement plan down on paper. List the different ways you use your kitchen. Do you entertain a lot? Make a lot of family meals? Host large family gatherings for holidays? Do you have young children? Do you like friends hanging around and talking while you work, or do you like to be able to concentrate on making that perfect béchamel sauce? Once you have your list, you can begin to make decisions. Can you replace your existing appliance with a new one? Or will you need to move things around to make a better work space? Do you need to explore renting tools/equipment? Should you call in pest control while you have the large kitchen appliances out of the way? The first kitchen appliance to consider is the refrigerator. If you do a lot of entertaining, or have several children, buy an extra-large refrigerator with three doors, and ice and water dispensers in the door. This gives you more flexibility, saves energy, and gives you plenty of space for extra foods. Decide whether you would like white, black or stainless steel. These three timeless finishes will give kitchens lasting value. Keep all your kitchen appliances in the same finish, as it pulls the look together. Consider your needs when purchasing a new stove. Do you prefer electric or gas? If you want gas, but don’t have a gas line, you will need to hire a plumber and have the gas company come out. If you can rent tools/equipment and do some of the work yourself, that is a bonus. If you do a lot of entertaining, consider buying a catering-quality stove, perhaps with six burners, and/or a grill, and maybe a double oven. When you decide on a kitchen appliance such as a dishwasher, always go with a top-of-the-line model if you have a large family. Washing dishes in the dishwasher is more energy-efficient than washing by hand, and you will be running it at least once a day. If you entertain, it will get even more use.
