Making the Right Plumbing and Electrical Choices
Both professionalplumbing contractors and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) plumbers need to understand plumbing and electric options and choices as well as plumbing and electrical code requirements, especially with electric and electricalinterior wiring and installation procedures for major appliances.

When home improvement plans are proposed, it is necessary to define the space, determine which design will meet or exceed requirements. Select the major kitchen appliances first. These are large pieces and will dictate the placement and location of counter tops. Kitchen sinks and their location is often driven by the location of drains and hot and cold water supply lines. While not as critical, there may be specific kitchen furniture that needs to be accommodated in the final design. This would include items such as a stationary or roll-about butcher block or a kitchen table and chair set.
Once the plan is approved, the design phase will refine and define the look of the kitchen. Be sure to get input from the primary user of the kitchen, as there is very little that is more frustrating than an ill-planned workspace. The Sullivan theory of “Form follows function” is a good starting point.
The type of range – gas or electric – is important to decide early on in the project. Gas is not generally considered a DIY installation, a certified professional is required in many states. The peace of mind of having a leak-free and safe gas installation is well-worth the price.
Electric wiring is also potentially dangerous and not a job for the average DIY. Knowledge and compliance with the current electrical codes is mandatory. Again, it’s a job better left to a licensed professional.
This does not mean all of the work needs to be done by a contractor. There are a lot of parts to a kitchen that can be installed by a competent handyman or DIY. Plumbing in particular has become much more friendly with the introduction of compression fittings and flexible braided hose. For an old-time DIY who has been fitting pipe since pennies were made of solid copper, sweating pipe is easier than ever.
Plumbing and electrical work has its own special challenges. When in doubt, seek the advice or assistance of a qualified professional. Water flooding damage, electrical and gas fires are very easily avoidable – and all capable of destroying a house faster than it takes to describe. Be careful and be safe when building or remodeling.
